Recession is Trendy

Hello,

Today I have some facts that will either be very obvious to you or open your eyes.

What is Recession?

In today’s society we find the word ‘Recession’ in very common use. It is even used daily at my school… the majority of under 16′s understand what it is. But has it always been this way? No it hasn’t. I must have come across the word some time last year, perhaps late 2007, but it was not until I saw this graph did I actually notice this.

Google Trends search for ‘Recession’

I am no Google Trends master, I have no idea what Search Volume Index is in real searches, however it is very obvious that the amount of searches for ‘Recession’ went up massivly in 2008 from 2007. This makes me wonder, what other words have come into me frequent use lately?

I have been doing a quick scan of words. So far I have seen nothing as impressive as the graph above but I shall show you some I have found. If you find any, please share!

Google Trends search for ‘Success’

Google Trends search for ‘WordPress’

I recomend you to start using Google Trends if you don’t already, I certianlly need to more. It helps you to understand what the searches are like, and with very good skills, you could potentially use it to direct many money visitors to your site.

What are your experiences with this?

Thanks,

Shane

What can I Watch? Edition 3

Hello everybody,

Today I have some more videos for you!

This first one is possibly the most famous speech ever. As Martin Luther King Jr. day was this week I thought it obvious that I needed to post this. Please comment about it, but no racism or anything horrible.

My next video is one by Darren Rowse about How to Create Great First Impressions on New Readers and Convert Them Into Loyal Readers.

Thank you for watching these videos, I found they helped me a lot and I hope they help you too. Please don’t be afraid to comment! Even if it is saying I do not write enough, I need to know your thoughts.

Organisation is Important

Hello everybody,
We all know this, but how many of you actually are as organised as you should be? I am not. I am purposely posting this later than normal to prove some factors of organisation.

What is Organisation?

    1. The act or process of organizing.
    2. The state or manner of being organized: a high degree of organization.
  1. Something that has been organized or made into an ordered whole.
  2. Something made up of elements with varied functions that contribute to the whole and to collective functions; an organism.
  3. A group of persons organized for a particular purpose; an association: a benevolent organization.
    1. A structure through which individuals cooperate systematically to conduct business.
    2. The administrative personnel of such a structure.

Cited from http://www.answers.com/topic/organization

Yet another word with loads of meanings, maybe I should have asked you all what you think of this one too! Today we are mainly going to be talking about number 1 on the list. Now we know what it means, how can we do it?

How can You be Organised?

There are hundreds of books on this subject, so I suggest trying to read some of those. But I am going to list, and try to rank, 10 different methods of organisation.

  1. Know what you are going to do. This could include a to-do list at the beginning of everyday or maybe a gantt chart. A good idea if you are doing either of these are to make sure you know which tasks are important and which are urgent.
  2. Plan your time carefully. For some people, planning time is easy. However, if you have a family, be it your children or your parents, then you will often find your plans are messed up as they might want to do something. I recommend doing all urgent and important things first while you definitely have time without having anyone change the plans. Also, ask them what their plans are!
  3. Do everything in advance. As you will soon see, if you leave something too long then there may be problems.
  4. Be alert. If you wake up early then you will have more time and be more awake to do the things you need to do. Good ways to do this are: wake up early, eat a healthy breakfast and exercise.
  5. Do not set ridiculous deadlines! If you do this it will make you feel like you are failing when you are not.
  6. Be happy!! You will never be 100% organised if you are stressed.
  7. Be ready. If something happens there is a chance you will not be able to get any work done for days, you need to be ready for this. Which strongly relates to number 3.
  8. Do not get distracted. If you are like me you write your posts or essay, or whatever you are writing, whilst listening to music, talking on msn and using facebook or twitter. Don’t. A good idea is to unplug your internet while you write, though can be inappropriate.
  9. Ask for help. Some people are very good at helping to organise other people, use them!
  10. Do it. It may sound silly but many people, including myself, are very organised and know what to do when.. but don’t actually do it! You need to, otherwise there would be no point of me writing this post to help you.

What Could Happen if You are Not Organised?

Well this is what I am proving to you by making this late.

  1. People ask what is happening. Where is the post? Why is it late?
  2. Feedburner sends out the RSS even though it is not out yet! Then it does not send when the post is out!
  3. You cannot be trusted as much.
  4. Your reputation is ruined.

I hoped you found this post and demonstration very useful.

Thank you,

Shane

Interview with Kathryn Crosby

Hello,

It is Saturday today, so time for another interview! I try to stay away from political sites but this one is really interesting. So, let me introduce you to Kathryn Crosby!

Hello Kathryn, thank you very much for agreeing to this interview.

Firstly, could you please tell us who you are?

I currently live in Armidale, a small town in rural New South Wales, Australia. I have lived all over the place, moving a lot for work. I have been consulting in communication or doing short contract work for about 10 years – Candidates Online Pty Ltd is just over a year old. Prior to starting the company I only did politics as a hobby.

How, and why, did you start your career? Who/What was your inspiration?

I started my career in commercial radio as a radio announcer. I never really had inspiration – I just had a collection of things I liked doing. Although I’m sure my friends would tell you it was not the things I liked doing so much as the adrenalin hit I got from doing those things – I’m a bit of an adrenalin junkie/workaholic/stress addict.

I had dabbled with websites and online stuff for my work in radio stations – updating text and the like, but really didn’t know much about them. In truth I still don’t – I know what I want them to do and how I want them to look – and I surround myself with good people to get it done.

The connection between those two is actually stronger than it may appear – both are intensely private mediums, you usually listen to the radio or use a website alone. They are very complementary – you can actually browse the web and listen to the radio simultaneously without any conflicting demand for attention, but can’t watch television or read a newspaper and be online simultaneously (unless you are consuming that tv or newspaper through the web of course).

And whether you are designing a radio program or a website the process is the same – identify the target audience design a listener/user experience – create that experience and engage them in it in an interactive way – have them enjoy that experience enough for them to want to tell someone else about it.

So the jump to website development or web-driven business wasn’t that great personally – it was just like programming a radio station.

You currently run a website based on politics, has politics always been your career choice?

I started my career in political consulting at the age of 21 (I started in radio when I was 15). I volunteered to run a campaign for a federal election – and I was instantly hooked – there really is no adrenalin high quite like an election campaign. After that I realised how very little I knew about the world so I went to University. I hadn’t finished high school – but I got in as a mature aged student (Mature aged… at 21!! hahaha). 10 years later I’m just about to finish my MBA and politics is my whole world.

Although I had always been around politics it was not something I ever considered a career option. As little as maybe 18 months ago I would have adamantly told you that you simply can’t make money out of political campaigning in Australia. If you want to work in Government – yeah sure you can have a nice career – but policy and governance was never the part I was interested in. I loved the campaign.

My decision to create a web based political company was basically this: Australian politicians won’t pay for consultants – but they will pay for tangible things. I thought if I could get them in by providing an online database and relatively cheap websites, then they would start to like having the professional campaign advice, and would eventually be prepared to pay for it.

What were your goals when you started? Have you achieved them yet? If so, how did you manage this?

My goals when I started: not go broke? That was the real driving force.

I had a number of altruistic goals – including the professionalization of election campaigning in Australia, giving candidates with no support the kind of advice and support they needed etc. But mostly it was out of an intense personal longing to be able to work as a professional political campaign consultant and not need a second job to pay the bills.

I haven’t achieved my goals yet. Trying to create a real political consulting industry and improve the standard of campaigning in the country is always going to be a decade long goal – not a year. The goals of the company have been significantly reviewed and refined of late to define more comprehensively what our core business is – and in doing so we have shifted from an online service company that creates websites – to a real world consultancy that helps others use the web.

At any point in your career, have you thought yourself or your company as a “failure” or had any major problems? If so how did you manage to get through this and what did you learn?

Hahaha – all the time. I had 7 clients fail to pay for their websites in 07 when I first started. And because their campaigns were over in 6 weeks, they had no incentive to pay me and they no longer needed their websites so didn’t care that I shut them down. I got through it by seriously scaling down my business – closing the office and moving it back in to my living room, and taking a big loan from my Father. Lesson learned: payment in advance.

There were many occasions prior to starting the company that I thought of myself as a failure because I couldn’t figure out how to work in this field without leaving the country. So anything after that doesn’t seem quite so… hopeless. In some small way I am still living the dream.

How did/do you go about promoting your website and career?

For an election campaign cycle I use a combination of search marketing (Google ads etc), direct mail and earned media (press releases, events etc). I’m also a member of the International Association of Political Consultants and network heavily both on and offline. Linked In is great for professional networking, but I also have a few clients I’ve met randomly on facebook too.

In between election cycles I power down the business so it is humming along on minimal staff and overheads – and I don’t actually promote the business very much. I have some corporate and NFP clients that have me doing things like email newsletters that provide me a stable income for those periods.

Have you any advice to give to those currently in the position you were in when you first started?

Plan. Know what you want to do and why you want to do it – write it all out. And then cull it back to the absolute minimum. Write the rest up as goals to be achieved over the next five or more years. If you try and go too big too fast, that is the fastest way to bust.

Before going in to business, you really need to understand that most new businesses will not turn a profit in at least the first two years. Invariably any new business idea will be too big to be realistically launched so when planning – try and figure out if you have enough cash (or if need be credit) to back it up and fund its operation for at least two years. If not, then rethink the business model and probably scale it back a bit more.

Being realistic is really important. Realistic in your goals, your expectations – and yourself. No point in working 140 hours a week; putting yourself in hospital won’t get the business off the ground. You will need to work hard but remember to still have a life. A nice goal is to have dinner with the family every night (if you have a family).

And I’m not kidding: payment in advance. It is very tempting when you are starting out to do a few freebies and heavily discounted jobs so you get some runs on the board. However, you need to actually make money and you don’t do that if you are working for free. 50% down is fine, but don’t start the job until you have some cash at least. You might miss out on the odd job but at least you won’t wind up massively in debt.

The other piece of advice I would give is get a good accountant as early as you possibly can. If you have a little bit of money, spend it on an accountant who can help you properly structure your business and help you identify where you should and shouldn’t be spending. A good accountant is often the difference between going broke or not.

What plans do you have for the future?

I’m currently restructuring the business – siphoning off all the creative production of websites and advertisements etc. and refining the core business back to strategy consulting. We will still focus on online strategies: particularly social networking penetration which I have been doing an enormous amount of work on, and search, which I don’t fully have my head around yet, but I’m working on it. The actual production of websites will be done by a partner company who produce websites all the time.

We are also working with an American partner on a very large proposal to do a 2 year long party building project. If we get that I’m going to be exceptionally busy – and will be building 2 new web based applications that to my knowledge don’t exist anywhere else (well, one of them is a combination of things that I have not seen together – the other I know for a fact is not being done at all). And no, I’m not telling you what they are. Yet.

Is there anything you would like to add?

One final thought: it is important to know and understand if your business is an online business – or a real world business supported by an online presence.

My biggest mistake when I started Candidates Online was to try and make a real world service an online one – and it just doesn’t work that way. The easiest way to figure that out is to ask yourself: ‘If the web didn’t exist – would this business exist?’. My original answer to that was no – I’m selling websites. But the real answer was yes – I’m marketing election candidates. I could do that without the web – I’d just be doing it in a different medium. It might seem a tiny thing, but my business was in significant trouble until I corrected this fundamental misunderstand of what I was doing.

Thank you Kathryn.

Told you it was interesting didn’t I! Radio host turned political. What are you thoughts? Perhaps you have some questions for Kathryn?
Thank you,

Shane

The Social Networking Era Part 2

Hello,

I did not want there to be too much content in yesterday’s post because I wanted you to come up with ideas and debate. Now I am going to go through some of the top Social Network’s but I shall not rank them, you can if you would like. But I would like you to think about: How did they become successful? Why did they succeed over the other thousands of networks there are? Who is their audience? Are they all trying to do the same thing and compete or are they in different niches and trying to compliment each other? These are all questions you should be thinking about, and letting us all know about!

Most Common

Facebook

Well currently I do not think anyone can argue that Facebook, at least here in England, is the largest used Social Network. However I do not plan on ranking them, though you can if you would like. Facebook, according to the timeline I showed you yesterday, is the newest big scale Social Network. So, how did they become so successful so quickly? I do not know the answer to this, but I can try guessing. Facebook actually started in 2004 and was extremely successful as it was launched only to students at Harvard University and within a month, half of the student body had joined. Now that is a lot of people for one month in a closed network! Another thing that has increased their success is the fact that it went Open Source and allowed people to make applications, I believe this was new at the time and not many other networks had tried it.

Linked In

This Social Network is not quite as generalised as Facebook, it is specialised for business use. Some people think that it is surprising that people would use LinkedIn as Facebook and some of the others have a bigger audience. However with it being focused on business, more people would be interested in what you are talking about. Also, LinkedIn is used more for business whereas Facebook is used more personally and with friends rather than colleagues. A very useful part of LinkedIn is the LinkedIn Answers which is similar to Yahoo and Google Answers, however this is based on business and has many experts in the certain field.

Twitter

Twitter.. the social network all bloggers, and everyone else, seem to be using. I know very few bloggers and people that are big in “Make Money Online” that do not use twitter. Everyone seems to be on there. So how did Twitter become so successful? Well, the audience liked it. If they did not like it then they would not keep coming back, and Twitter would have no users. It started off being used to tell everybody everything you are doing, but has gradually become more used for advertising. I believe that Twitter has had a lot of success from it’s API. Even while I was writing that scentance I saw 3 new applications being “twittered” about. It makes me wonder.. would Twitter be so successful if it wasn’t for Adobe AIR?

Of course there are many other top Social Networks but these are ones I use and know more about. Please comment and write blog posts about it, I want to know your opinions!

Thank you,

Shane

The Social Networking Era Part 1

Hello,
Today I would like to take the time to explain to you everything you have heard before about Social Networking websites. Why am I doing this? Well it is simple really, it will benefit you. Now, I am not going to do what is normal and just list my top 5 favourite Social Networking tools. Oh no. I want a debate! So, I am going to give you my viewpoint and I want you to give me yours. Usually I say just comment. You can comment if you would like to, and it is encouraged, but another way you could carry the debate on is to give your opinions on your blog! If you do this just make sure to either comment or email me, else how am I supposed to know?

What is a Social Networking Site?

Everybody has their own opinion to what this is, so here is mine. A Social Networking Site is a website that lets you interact with other people through the internet. Often this includes a profile for each user but is not necessary true. Many people believe that the phrase “Social Networking Site” means sites such as Facebook or Bebo. I do not think this is true, if it means interacting with other people then it must mean that all of these “Web 2.0″ sites are “Social Networking Sites”. For example, I interact to you through this blog and you interact back through comments and emails. Just to keep it simple, for the rest of this article I am going to use the common definition of it being a site like Facebook or Bebo.

What is the History of Social Networking Sites?

The history of Social Networking is extremely interesting. Most people, including myself until today, do not realise that it actually started in 1997 by SixDegrees. I will only be touching on the subject so if you would like to know more, take a look at this article. The best way to see a history is to look at a timeline. I am going to show you the one that is on the page I just linked you to.

Now, I do not know about you but I did not start hearing the term “Social Networking” used until about late 2006. Ah, this coincides with Facebook and Twitter. I find it very interesting how something that has been out since 1997 was not used as a common term until over 9 years later.

The Social Networking Era posts will probably be spread out over two or three seperate posts depending on what you all think of them. I would like you to debate how the current top social networks got there and what their success really was. I will give you my answer tomorow.

Thank you,

Shane

Who are You?

Hello again!
I was just thinking.. by now you all know me. But I do not know you! Now, this is going to be a very short post but I believe it is essential to understand and know your readers. Without readers there is no point in me writing a post everyday, or ever for that matter! I know I already have a good amount of readers, but I want to know you. So what I am going to do is ask you even more questions!

What is your name?

What is your website/career/business called and what does it do?

When you first started what were your ambitions?

Have you succeeded with these yet? If so, how did you manage to? If not, why not?

What else can you tell us about yourself?

Thank you!
Shane

What can I Watch? Edition 2

Hello everybody,

Currently I am choosing videos that I have seen in the past and really like, but I was wondering.. would you prefer to see ones that are made the same week? Please let me know! Now onto the videos this week.

Firstly I would like to show you a very interesting video that you have more than likely seen before. Watch it again. You will see something different, understand it differently. The video is of course Steve Job’s commencement speech to the graduates of Stanford University in 2005. It is also very funny, who knew before watching the video that Steve Jobs got fired from Apple?! On another note he also speaks about life and death.

This is not a speech. This is not an interview. This is motivation and inspiration at it’s purest!

Thank you for watching these videos, I found they helped me a lot and I hope they help you too.

I Like To Blog

Hello everybody,
Today I have a review for you all! I am writing this review because I am really impressed with the idea, it is so simple yet extremely effective. This is not a paid review, but even if it was it would still be my opinions whether good or bad. This, fairly short,  review is about iLikeToBlog, which is a wordpress plugin that you can see in action on my sidebar.

The first thing I would like to write about is the design work. Now, this is going to be hard as at the time of writing the website was only launched about 2 days ago. I know that Dave, the owner and creator, has many plans for the design so I shall not go on too much about it. The layout of the website is extremely basic but it is still in BETA and seems to be very clean. The logo however is one element of the design that keeps making me go “wow”. It is fairly basic but is very aesthetically pleasing and captures attention.

Now we have briefly covered the design, it is time to cover the content and focus of the website. Even with just a quick glance it is easy to see what the website is for. It has a sidebar on the left that says:

iLikeToBlog is a free wordpress plugin and link exchange service that helps you to easily build up quality organic backlinks on your blog.

Important: Plugin requires at least WP 2.7 and PHP5+ in order to work.

Not only does this tell us exactly what it does but it also gives the requirements. The front page lists all of the websites that have signed up, which gives a very good backlink without even considering the fact that the sites can also be put on peoples sidebars. Another part of the website is the new forum, there is not really much to write about yet but I believe that the forum could be used as a good source of exchange making.

The plugin works in a very basic way. It uses the idea of the WordPress “Blogroll” but rather than having to manually add websites to it, this plugin lets the user exchange a link with another website that uses the plugin. It is so simple that it does not make the load time any slower and it is extremely effective. The way it works allows all links to be 100% organic and SEO friendly.

Personally I believe the plugin and website idea to be extremely good, as it is simple but is very useful. Although the plugin is still in early beta stages, it seems to have the potential to “revolutionise” the link building industry. Of course there are many problems with the current website, but I shall only list them as they are fairly obvious.

  1. The RSS Subscribers feature does not seem to work
  2. The website design could be made better, but it is only in beta
  3. A way to search and filter the websites might be needed as there will be many more than there is now
  4. Not enough different niches yet

That seems to be all for now. I hope this review helps the owner of iLikeToBlog and has been interesting for you all!
