The Social Networking Era Part 1

Hello,
Today I would like to take the time to explain to you everything you have heard before about Social Networking websites. Why am I doing this? Well it is simple really, it will benefit you. Now, I am not going to do what is normal and just list my top 5 favourite Social Networking tools. Oh no. I want a debate! So, I am going to give you my viewpoint and I want you to give me yours. Usually I say just comment. You can comment if you would like to, and it is encouraged, but another way you could carry the debate on is to give your opinions on your blog! If you do this just make sure to either comment or email me, else how am I supposed to know?

What is a Social Networking Site?

Everybody has their own opinion to what this is, so here is mine. A Social Networking Site is a website that lets you interact with other people through the internet. Often this includes a profile for each user but is not necessary true. Many people believe that the phrase “Social Networking Site” means sites such as Facebook or Bebo. I do not think this is true, if it means interacting with other people then it must mean that all of these “Web 2.0″ sites are “Social Networking Sites”. For example, I interact to you through this blog and you interact back through comments and emails. Just to keep it simple, for the rest of this article I am going to use the common definition of it being a site like Facebook or Bebo.

What is the History of Social Networking Sites?

The history of Social Networking is extremely interesting. Most people, including myself until today, do not realise that it actually started in 1997 by SixDegrees. I will only be touching on the subject so if you would like to know more, take a look at this article. The best way to see a history is to look at a timeline. I am going to show you the one that is on the page I just linked you to.

Now, I do not know about you but I did not start hearing the term “Social Networking” used until about late 2006. Ah, this coincides with Facebook and Twitter. I find it very interesting how something that has been out since 1997 was not used as a common term until over 9 years later.

The Social Networking Era posts will probably be spread out over two or three seperate posts depending on what you all think of them. I would like you to debate how the current top social networks got there and what their success really was. I will give you my answer tomorow.

Thank you,

Shane

  1. Well I’ve known about Social Networking since I started a MySpace… not that ever really took that much notice of it back then :P

As for how they got to their success? They all get brought back to the one point:
The Users keep coming back. As long as they keep coming back Social Networking sites like the Twitter’s, MySpace’s and Facebook’s won’t be going anywhere any time soon.

  2. Hey,

Windows Live spaces started before 2006, they had an older sort of thing at the time which was blogs that were commented but you could share things like photos etc.

That could have been a major start because I remember nothing of the sort and I used it a fair bit.

    Nice write up as always.
