Starting a business or getting re-energized now makes you have to be disciplined and do more with less. Successful sustainable enterprises start off like this and continue to operate in this manner for the long haul. It doesn't mean they stop spending, it means they spend what they need and they take appropriate risks without basing them on fear, but rather sound business acumen, data, and instinct. Small business is are what will take us out of the recession, we must keep building! Great article! Try things you never have, see what marketing is available and make sure you can track results. Panicky marketing is frivolous so make sure you stay calm, positive and put your money in the right places. This is how we have done well. At first it was a shock to deal with but now we are doing great because we have done many things Shane suggests but also been very creative. We're hiring to grow now while other companies are firing to stay small. Also, I would suggest to do as much as you can with contractors. Look at places like Odesk and other local contractor or temp resources. Only hire W2 if it's an absolute need. Be smart about hiring. Creative marketing is key as well.
