I agree. A comment should say more than just great post. In fact, why would you say great post without explaining your reason behind your words? Why not back up what you're saying and get people to interact with that? If you're going to leave a comment it's because you want to express how you feel to the author of the post and to whomever may read your comment and decide to add on to it further.

I like Twitter a lot for the fact that if I come across a post that strikes my interest but I just cannot think of something that would be useful to add, therefore I'd rather not comment, I can share it meaning I found it useful and feel that some one else may be able to do something more with it than I could. Does this mean I don't care as much as someone else, however? Not at all. In fact, quite the contrary. It, in my opinion, means I respect the author enough to not say something useless and instead spread the joy of the article itself for someone who might be able to give a more important message than I could.

Another great example of commenting is not saying sorry for a long comment. Just not making them too long!

What do everyone think?

I agree completely with you Roland, commenting really does help everyone. Commenting effectively (which both you and Paul are very good at) is a great way to improve people's opinion of you as a commenter and is a great way for you to get readers on your own blog.

This post was not written to comment on my style (infact, the post was written as a guest post for The Infopreneur but was declined due to the fact another ProBlogger wrote a similar post around the time I wrote this... so I kept it!) but thank you for mentioning it. I am currently having an error behind the scenes which ruined my post layout.. I tried to retrieve it but am not please about the layout and presentation of this post.

Commenting is a great way to raise your profile. With links going back to your own blog or website it can only be a good thing. Everyone benefits both the poster and the commenter. Shane's posts reflect good practice in blogging. Informative articles and well laid out. Very importantly they should be to the point and and to be only as long as necessary. Reading a a PC screen can be hard on the eyes and so the layout and length is vital to get right. This post is a good example.

Great article on the subject. I also like the fact that the posts are more often to keep the interest in the subject matter, I do like the comments like you said that often lead to more information on any post. Looking forward to the future posts
