Nope, this is not about saving the world from Global Warming. It is not about getting rid of governments. And it certainly is not about stopping Disney from making supervillians.
This is about Firefox. Well, the people behind it. Between the 14th and the 21st of THIS MONTH (September 2009) Mozilla is hosting their Service Week. Basically it means that normal people (eg. me and you) help other people in the local area. Now do not fret, I could not think of anything to do either… but Mozilla did!
-
Teach senior citizens how to use the Web.
-
Show a non-profit how to use social networking to grow its base of supporters.
-
Help install a wireless network at a school.
-
Create Web how-to materials for a library’s computer cluster.
-
Refurbish hardware for a local computer center.
-
Update a non-profit organization’s website.
-
Teach the values of the open Web to other public benefit organizations.
Hmm.. this all seems to be computer related. Well if you want to do something different, check out what other people are doing!
Now it is time for some math.
1 * 24 = 24
24 * 7 = 168
That means each of us has 168 hours in a week, though of course very few of them are spare. Which is why it is impressive that currently (9:50pm 7th September) there are currently 8,240 hours donated.
8240 / 168 = 49
That is the equivalent to 49 people spending their whole week, no sleep, to help others. Now that is impressive. Lets double it.
8240 / 7 = 1177
Right, now I know for a fact that we have over 1177 visitors here on Success Circuit (though they do not comment.. grr), so if we all spend 1 hour a day for 7 days then we can make a BIG difference to the WORLD.
So, what do you plan to do? I am going to think about it and let you know very soon.
Have fun saving the world.

Great post, cool mathematics
Not 100% sure what I will do, but I will try to help out others and see if they require any computer assistance =D
Till then,
Jean
Its awesome post. I also mind when some one ask me to help him/her and i feel pleasure when they say thanks to me.
This is a great idea by Mozilla. The world needs more people who go out of their way to help others. Even little things can go a long way. By spending a few minutes helping someone, you can brighten their day and maybe even teach them something. Maybe they'll pay it forward and help someone else too. The kindness of strangers can really save the world.
It's a good initiative, but I wonder how many people will actually do something about it..

Ouch, I completely forgot about Mozilla Service Week. I guess there's always next year. Plus we should be trying to help people all the time, not just one week a year. Maybe it's the boyscout in me, but I've always believed in being kind to everyone including strangers.
I did not do anything to specific, I just decided to actually ask people if there is anything they want to learn that I can teach them. It works well.
I too believe in helping everybody, and I am no boyscout!
Unfortunately I forgot about Mozilla Service Week this year. I guess there's always next year. Personally l like to be helpful to others throughout the year. We shouldn't need 1 week where we try extra. It should just come naturally.
We shouldn't just act like this one week a year. This should be your mindset year round. Jump at opportunities to help people and you will feel very rewarded, plus the world would be a happier place.

Well that is good of you to make that effort. You're a good guy Shane. I'm sure those people appreciated you taking the time to offer your help.
