What is Success?

Posted by Shane Hudson On January - 7 - 2009

Hello,
I keep getting emails from people asking what is success. I was planning to leave this post for a later time when I have more readers, but I think it really ought to be published today as this site is about Success but the word has infinite meanings and depends on the person.

Instead of letting you know what I think success is, the obvious thing to do is get you to tell me. So I have asked many people that I speak to online to let me know their definition of success.

What is your definition of success?

Here, in no particular order, are everyone’s answers that have contacted me so far.

Shannon Lilly – “Success is defined by what you make it.”
Danny Cooper - “Success is having the feeling you get when you help someone, every minute of everyday.”
Anonymous – “Success is when you make a name for yourself with god.”
NarNar – “Someone who is successful set a goal, reached it, and is accepted by others for his or her achievement.”
Hive – “Hard work never fails.”
Paul Hudson – “The achievement of your aims or goals, I guess if you achieve them you were successful.”
MellowMasher – “To achieve without malice.”
Joel Drapper – “An event that accomplishes it’s intended purpose.”
Lauren Bain – “Achieving your own personal goal.”
Gary Vaynerchuk - “Being able to do what you want to do everyday and having the ability to spend time with your family.”
Anonymous – “Success is overrated. A donkey is successful at being a donkey.”
Angela Embleton – “Achieving a personal goal.”
Scott – “Success: Anything higher than failure and you’re on the right track.”
John Meloche – “Success is consistantly working harder than you are paid to do, which will ultimately pay you more for what you do.”
Jonathan Muller – “Success is when you’ve reached the place where you no longer have an unquenchable desire for something more. Success is a place of contentment with what you have. Once you are content, you are a success, whether it’s with 50$ or 500,000K”

My meaning of success – It is the sense of achievement, pride and accomplishment in everything you try, in business and in life. It is unexplainable.

Although this is my answer, I also really like all of your answers.. especially Shannon Lilly’s who really does show a deep sense of meaning.

Please let me know what you think by commenting or emailing me! I will always reply to both (though email is quicker if you would like reply urgently). Anybody that lets me know will be put on the list.. I wonder how long we can make it!

Thank you for reading,
Shane Hudson

Shane, thanks for sharing this post and great answers. Maybe those that commented would be interested in doing a slightly more in-depth survey on “How do you define success?” by going to: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/QW2JLJP
