Karyn Colfer’s Interview – A Mum in a Million

When people discuss their inspirations, parents are often left out of the scenario. One set of parents that truly are inspirational, not only for their own children but for many others both young and old world-wide are Karyn and Tim Colfer.  These are the parents of Glee star Chris Colfer. You may have read my post in April where I discussed Chris’ accomplishments and bullying issues as well as his sister Hannah’s rollercoaster ride with epilepsy. This time, I was honoured with interviewing their mum Karyn who is probably the most amazing person I have had the pleasure to converse with, although I have a feeling that she will deny it and say that it is her children who make her who she is!  Not only has Karyn raised two humble, loving and fabulous children, she has done this whilst keeping them both grounded through upset and trauma.

Hello Karyn, thank you for agreeing to this interview. Can I please start by asking you to tell us a little about yourself?

I just turned 49 in January. I love to cook and find myself entertaining a lot so that I can cook for my friends and family. There’s something very comfortable about watching people enjoy a good meal, a nice glass of wine and I love the conversation and warmth it brings into a room.

I have heard you state that Hannah has 50 epileptic episodes per hour, how have you and Tim managed to help her maintain enthusiasm and strength over the years? Continue reading

Mike initially became interested in meditation  by reading  a book ,Silva  Mind Control, which is ‘a collection of techniques ranging from healing & distant healing, to astral projection, to a form of meditation which they called “Dynamic Meditation’, although he admits to only practicing the techniques for a short time.  Continue reading

Interview with Author Gabrielle Kimm

For all of you who have dreamt of writing, I had the great pleasure in speaking to a lovely lady, Gabrielle Kimm author of His Last Duchess and The Courtesans Lover. Gaby spoke about how to find an agent, trials and tribulations on how to become a published writer and many more interesting topics.

Please tell the readers a little about yourself. What started you off wanting to write?

I first knew I wanted to write a novel when I was twelve.   I wrote all sorts of things throughout my teens and twenties (short stories, poems, articles etc), but didn’t feel confident enough to tackle a full-length novel for many years – not until my younger daughter started school, in fact.  At that point, I began to feel I could indulge what was fast becoming less of a wish to write a novel, and more of a need.

I did an MA in Creative Writing at the University of Chichester between 2005 and 2007.  This was a revelation!  Not just because the tuition was absolutely wonderful, which it was, but because for the first time I was working with people who really understood what it’s like to be pretty well obsessed with a desire to write.  I suppose doing the course validated all the time and effort I was putting into my writing at this point – it certainly gave me confidence to know that the tutors (writers whom I admired a great deal) thought that what I was producing was OK.

The inspiration for my first novel – His Last Duchess – came from a Robert Browning poem (My Last Duchess), which I had first met and loved as an undergraduate.  Continue reading

Interview with Web Entrepreneur James Chartrand – Why He Wears Women’s Underwear.

Gender inequality in the 21st Century? Surely not!

Throughout time, it has been widely known that women are less accepted than men in most areas of their careers. Writing is no exception. Many women have had to use pen names in order to publish their work and be accepted in the literary world. I recently spoke to author and blogger James Chartrand, Web Development team Men with Pens. James was a successful and well known writer for two years before controversially stating on Copy Blogger that in fact he was a she!

You have stated on Copy Blogger that you chose a name that would command respect; you could have chosen any male name how did you decide on that particular pseudonym?

I used to write creative fiction, and one of the characters’ names was James Chartrand – I’d chosen James because it was the name of a childhood friend, and I liked it, and I chose Chartrand as a tip of the hat to my Québecois roots. So it was a name I was familiar with, that felt comfortable to me and that reflected my personality well. There really wasn’t any more deep deliberation than that! Continue reading

An Interview with an Opera Singer Turned Primary School Teacher

Today I had the pleasure of speaking to a talented teacher with whom I work. Knowing that her pre-teaching history was in the arts I realised how interesting her story would be. I wanted to see what journey was required of her to travel from the stage to a Primary School.

If you want to start by saying a little about yourself, we can go from there.

I started learning the piano when I was 12, it was a struggle from the start as my mother didn’t want me to because my sister hadn’t enjoyed it so she thought it would be a waste of money sending me to lessons!  Eventually she let me because my sister had to take it up again to do her CSE music. Then I started doing really well in it and she decided that I had better keep it up. It was my second piano teacher who phoned her up one day out of the blue and told her that I had a good voice and basically said that she had a friend who was at Covent Garden who was prepared to teach me. Interview with 13 Year Old Business woman Hayleigh Scott – Production to Perfection

I was humbled to interview this inspirational young lady who became hearing impaired as a baby and started her own company hayleigh’s cherished charms  in 2010 selling hearing aid jewellery that she designed and made.

Hello Hayleigh, could you please start by telling us a little about yourself?

I’m Hayleigh Scott and I’m 13 years old. I really like my siblings and make jewellery. I just turned 13 this month. I have packed a lot into those 13 years!

Happy belated birthday. Tell me a little about the things you have packed in to your 13 years.

I almost died when I was a baby and the drugs they used to save my life are what probably took away my hearing. My mom figured out that I had hearing loss because she was at the park with me and my twin sister and my twin (Vienna) looked at an airplane going overhead that was very loud but I didn’t react at all.  Continue reading

An Interview with Tarra-Lyn. A future Hollywood agent?

I feel very lucky to have been able to speak to Tarra-Lyn a young lady who is living the dream in Hollywood on her way to reaching her own goals and dreams.

Hello Tarra, thank you for talking to me.  Would you like to start by telling me something about yourself?

Okay, well I’m 23 years old, graduated University last summer, originally from Ontario, Canada & am currently living in Los Angeles

What made you move to LA?

Well I’ve always known I had a passion for the entertainment industry & popular culture. I keep up to date as much as possible with the industry. So I went to University for Business Administration/Marketing for a base knowledge of that side of things and decided after graduation that I wanted to come out here to see what happened as I tried to break into the industry. An Interview with BBC Radio2 Newscaster Fenella Fudge

Today I had the amazing experience on speaking to BBC Radio2 Newscaster Fenella Fudge; no I did not ask her about her name! There is not much I can say to describe this hilarious woman; you will just have to read on to find out for yourselves.

Hi Fenella, please tell us a little about yourself

Well, when I was about five, people used to ask me what I wanted to be when I grew up … and I used to reply “a giraffe”. I had no idea you had to stay human. It’s a goal I’ve never fulfilled, but it showed an early tendency to think somewhat ‘outside the box’.

I joined the BBC straight from college (I did the International Baccalaureate rather than A Levels) as my father wasn’t keen on me going to university and falling under ‘bad influences’! The beeb (BBC) took me on as a trainee secretary, teaching me to type and do shorthand.
