Have you heard of a Canadian named John M Meloche? No? Well have you heard of Melochenator, Synergy, MeloTel, National Projects, PC Everywhere, CanAdvance, Melojobs or Mr In Demand? I am sure that you would have heard of at least one of them. So yes, you have heard of John as he is or has been involved with each and every one of these businesses.
So read on to find out more about this entrepreneur including something about a rap song (!?!)
Hi John, thank you for taking the time to talk to me.
No problem, happy to help. What business owner doesn’t like talking about themselves anyway?
Can I ask you to tell me about yourself?
I consider myself a successful entrepreneur, as I am highly motivated to seizing opportunities afforded to me and dedicating my time to flourishing opportunities. I am a business owner and operate on a consultation basis for a number of organisations. I started in the industry as a hobbyist and ultimately evolved into a very rewarding career of working over the Internet.
Even though you have answered this in previous interviews, can you remind us how you started your career, who or what were your inspirations and what were your initial goals?
Well, I first became interested in computers and the internet long before Google even existed in 1995. I started as a hobbyist and made a self reflecting website to show my friends and family. Ultimately someone contacted me in 1996 and asked me to make them a website. They offered me money and as a kid, that was the greatest thing ever. It peaked my curiosity and I immediately started focusing on other ways to let computers and the internet take me to new heights.
How many sites/companies do you currently own or run?
That’s a good question. Currently I only own one company exclusively, that’s MeloTel. I am however an active partner in four other corporations in different industries such as marketing, advertising, production and project management. It’s not hard to count the websites I own, that is seven active websites. Trying to know how many companies I work with on a consultation basis is a difficult question because many of my clients have different business needs. Some need marketing; some need hosting and domains, some need phones and others just need some help. I currently have relationships with more than 30 corporations and organizations. I wouldn’t say I “run” these businesses; however they do count on me for objective review of processes and planning.
They all seem pretty diverse, how did you manage to get involved in so many different companies?
I am a firm believer in pursuing fields that you find interesting and can be passionate about. I just happen to be interested in many things. In North America there is an expression for a motorcycle that can ride on the roadway and the dirt track, it’s Enduro. I work well in a suit in the most professional of environments and also roll my sleeves up to assume hands on approach to any challenge including getting dirty. Something I learned years ago is you can get an education worth thousands of dollars just by asking questions and listening to what others have to say. I attribute my success and diversity to consistently working harder than I am paid to do, while knowing eventually I will make more for what I do.
Am I correct in thinking that you have also recorded a rap song? How did this come about?
Yes… The MeloTel Rap. It’s funny how that came about. I have a diverse social group which also includes a few particulary successful musicians (Dan-E-O) and artists (Secret Suburbia) who collaborated with me one weekend to come up with a unique form of Radio advertising for MeloTel. It started as a joke and we realized in the end that it was turning into a very catchy jingle so we expanded on it to form a whole rap song. Ultimately it was a huge success on my return on investment and I now have something to share with my kids so they think I’m the cool and hip dad.
Could you explain what Melotel does and how it has changed?
MeloTel is a cost effective national phone, internet, hosting and special project Management Company that provides services within all 10 provinces in Canada with one simple phone call. MeloTel specialises in call centre telecommunications and application development for handling complex processes such as handling call flow, lead management and order flows. MeloTel was formed in 2009 and since then has grown immensely to include new features and services very unique in the industry.
How did or do you go about promoting your websites? And what advice would you give to people trying to promote their own sites?
The nature of each website is what determines how it should be promoted. Some websites merely need some search engine optimization and a regular blog to become successful while another requires intense strategizing and hard work to attain relevant traffic. Currently I outsource my search engine marketing to a trusted partner who specialises in that field. I personally focus on the usability and overall operation of the online presence.
What would you consider your biggest struggles and how did you overcome or defeat them?
My struggles have changed over the years. They will always exist. Right now my biggest struggle is finding the time for all my ideas. Many of the moves I make in my businesses are moves that require much planning and diligence. I live by the motto: so many ideas, so little time. I am currently working on a way to be able to get less sleep at night while still feeling rested during the day. I am sure that one will make me really rich.
I know you were interviewed for this site 3 years ago, has much changed in your life since then?
Very much so. I closed two of my whole owned corporations so I could focus on MeloTel exclusively and I also now have a larger net of corporations and organizations that I am working with. I moved my headquarters and invested heavily in infrastructure in my business.
In your last interview with us, you stated ‘My immediate goals are to continue to build on my businesses and do even more! Eventually, I want to have everything I ever dreamed of having. One day’. How close are you to accomplishing that statement?
The old goals I dreamed of before are achieved, however I sleep every night and I am always dreaming of new goals to accomplishment. So I think it is fair to say I will never accomplish “all” of my dreams. I am sure having fun trying though.
Do you have any plans for the future?
Expand, expand and expand. MeloTel is my primary business at the money and I am invested heavily both financially and at the root of my soul. I am hoping to make MeloTel a household name in Canada by providing the services people really want and focussing on value and excellent service.
