  1. Dan Edwards – Design51

I recently had the pleasure of interviewing a young local business  man whom I find hard working and inspiring. Dan Edwards has worked hard to open his own Web Design business in Chichester, West Sussex, he can often be found working late hours to accomodate his clients.

I will let Dan tell you his story:

I studied Graphic Design at Chichester College and while there I was approached by an online retailer to do their graphics, which was my first taste of web design.

I started trading with my own business in 2009 — the Design 51  the name came from a typography lesson when I was playing around with letters and numbers and produced the logo.  I launched the business with that name and started freelancing whilst still doing work for the online retailer and also working for a local agency. When I set up Design 51 I started by working for people I already knew but it soon spread by word of mouth and I started to get more and more new clients and that’s where I wanted to be.

In 2010 I made the decision to work just for myself and shared an office base for the first year. By last year I was able to take on an office of my own and moved into this building at 12 Northgate in Chichester. We now have several national clients and also some worldwide, including a couple in the United States but the majority of our work is local and mainly for start-ups and small to medium-sized businesses. Throughout time, it has been widely known that women are less accepted than men in most areas of their careers. Writing is no exception. Many women have had to use pen names in order to publish their work and be accepted in the literary world. I recently spoke to author and blogger James Chartrand, Web Development team Men with Pens. James was a successful and well known writer for two years before controversially stating on Copy Blogger that in fact he was a she!

You have stated on Copy Blogger that you chose a name that would command respect; you could have chosen any male name how did you decide on that particular pseudonym?

I used to write creative fiction, and one of the characters’ names was James Chartrand – I’d chosen James because it was the name of a childhood friend, and I liked it, and I chose Chartrand as a tip of the hat to my Québecois roots. So it was a name I was familiar with, that felt comfortable to me and that reflected my personality well. There really wasn’t any more deep deliberation than that! (more…)
